Paul Vella Critien, born in Mosta in 1960, is a renowned Maltese artist celebrated for his vibrant ceramics, sculptures, and paintings. His artistic foundation was deeply influenced by his grandfather, Gianni Vella, a prominent Maltese painter and illustrator who worked across multiple mediums and left an indelible mark on Paul’s early years. Growing up alongside his grandfather in a creative environment, Paul absorbed valuable lessons in artistic discipline and versatility.
In 1978, Paul received a five-year Italian government scholarship, studying Fine Arts and Ceramics in Faenza, Bologna, and Ravenna. His mentors included leading Italian ceramists and sculptors, and his time in Italy exposed him to diverse artistic techniques despite the challenges of living through the politically turbulent ‘anni di piombo.’ He later worked as a car designer for Fiat before moving to the UK and Australia, where he served as a senior lecturer in Visual Arts and exhibited widely, including at the Tate in London and various international galleries.
Returning to Malta in 1988, Paul combined teaching with creating public art, notably the six-metre “Verso l’Alto” Millennium Monument in San Ġwann. His artistic style is characterised by dynamic energy, vivid colours, and bold forms, often experimenting with different clay bodies and firing techniques to achieve unique textures and finishes. Paul’s works are held in museums and private collections across Europe, Asia, the USA, and Australia.
Over a career spanning decades, Paul has not only produced an impressive body of work but also nurtured generations of Maltese artists during his 38 years as an educator. His contributions to public art have transformed spaces into accessible cultural landmarks, solidifying his role as a cultural ambassador for Malta. Today, from his studio in San Ġwann, Paul continues to create, mentor, and enrich Malta’s artistic heritage, blending international influences with his deep Maltese roots.
There is a lot more to say about this artist … more will follow in our future reviews.
