Regjun Tramuntana officially launched the Erasmus+ Sports project Deep Blue Green: Exercise for Wellbeing at Għadira Bay, in collaboration with international partners Anemos (Greece), Trekkify (Italy), and Médio Tejo (Portugal).
Building on the success of the earlier Blue Green Exercise for Wellbeing initiative, the project seeks to promote inclusion, health, and sustainability by encouraging elderly people, persons with disabilities, and those considered inactive to embrace physical activity in natural environments.
The press conference was opened by Bjorn Bonello, Executive Secretary of Regjun Tramuntana, who thanked all project partners and stakeholders for their contribution. President Clifford Galea emphasised the importance of cross-border cooperation for community wellbeing, while Parliamentary Secretary Dr Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, within the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing, highlighted the Government’s support, stressing the project’s alignment with public health and active ageing priorities.
The Deep Blue Green programme applies principles of eco-psychology, encouraging participants to enhance wellbeing through physical activity in natural settings. It integrates sport, culture, health awareness, and environmental responsibility, with activities such as:
-
Low-impact mobility sessions, including Tai Chi and Yoga, tailored to older adults and those with limited mobility.
-
Woodcraft workshops for the visually impaired.
-
Sports disciplines in collaboration with Special Olympics Malta youth and children.
-
Street sport sessions in public gardens.
-
Line dancing and art-in-nature activities promoting creativity and social engagement.
-
Healthy living workshops, complemented by citrus and herb-infused water prepared and distributed by the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Directorate.
-
Environmental clean-ups across the region, contributing directly to the care and preservation of local blue and green spaces.
The initiative demonstrates how small, routine actions in nature can combat inactivity, boost mental health, and strengthen community ties. It reflects the European Union’s commitment to active citizenship, inclusion, and sustainability, while highlighting Malta’s role in pan-European collaboration in sport and wellbeing.
In Malta, Regjun Tramuntana is supported by a wide network of organisations, including:
