Nico Conti has carved a distinctive path in the contemporary art scene, merging Malta’s rich ceramic traditions with cutting-edge technologies. A graduate of MCAST with a First-Class BA in Fine Arts, he went on to earn his Master’s in Ceramics & Glass at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. It was there that he began experimenting with 3D clay printing — a medium that has since become central to his artistic identity.
During his time in London, Conti’s innovative work gained international recognition. He had the rare honour of presenting his 3D-printed porcelain pieces to King Charles III, later receiving a commission to design porcelain artworks for His Majesty’s coronation. His practice, rooted in both heritage and experimentation, reflects his belief in “respecting the past while looking toward the future.”
Beyond his studio, Conti has played an important role in education and cultural exchange. As a lecturer at MCAST’s Institute for the Creative Arts, he teaches ceramics and sculpture across levels, while also having served as Visiting Tutor at the Royal Danish Academy. His ability to communicate complex ideas through both craft and teaching has made him a sought-after voice in the field, presenting at events such as London Craft Week and the European Vocational Skills Week in Brussels.
Conti’s artistic journey has taken him across Europe and beyond, with exhibitions in London, New York, Faenza, Stoke-on-Trent, and Valletta. His works have featured in prestigious showcases including Masterpiece Art Fair, the British Ceramics Biennial, and the Malta Biennale. Each piece embodies the contrasts that inspire him: stability and fragility, order and chaos, tradition and modernity.
In recognition of his contributions, Conti has received several awards, including the 2024 Malta Craft Award, the FRESH Award at the British Ceramics Biennial, and the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) Scholarship. His residencies, collaborations, and accolades highlight his impact not only as an artist but also as a cultural ambassador for Malta.
Now based in Paola, Conti continues to expand the possibilities of clay — transforming it into a visual language that speaks to history, innovation, and identity. His work is both a celebration of Malta’s artistic heritage and a bold step into the future of contemporary ceramics.
